Oslated infuses young passion into Techno from Seoul 韓国から若い情熱をテクノに吹き込むOslated

I had the pleasure to interview Jongmin Lee, the founder of "Oslated", the underground label in South Korea by e-mail.
韓国のアンダーグラウンドレーベル Oslatedの設立者であるLee Jongminさんに、メールにてお話を伺いました。

I'm fascinated by DJ Sakuma (Modest) 's DJ mixes now. As he released his mix from "Oslated", I got to know your label. I follow your SoundCloud account. I found favorite DJ mixes like Aaron J's one a lot from your recommendation.

Q1. How do you find good DJ mixes well?
どうやってうまくDJミックスを見つけていますか？
A1. I find them on some good platforms via social media.
Also, sometimes the djs ask me first to try their mix set. So I check them out and have some conversation with them.

Q2. I have read the mission statement of "Oslated". I empathize that because I blog from a sense of mission to feature unknown and talented young DJs and artists. Why did you start your label?

A2. Oslated project is the natural byproduct of this. It has the label’s international scope.
In my opinion, while South Korea has been influenced by American culture for a long time, the young generation now are more curious about European culture.
There’s no preferred treatment at Oslated, between the nationalities. it’s a platform for supporting talented local underground musicians of all stripes or scenes, domestically as well as abroad.
Oslatedプロジェクトは、これらの副産物です。国際的な視野を持っています。私見ではありますが、韓国は、長くアメリカ文化の影響を受けていましたが、若い世代はヨーロッパの文化に興味を持っています。
Oslatedにおいては、国籍によって優遇されることはありません。（韓国）国内でも海外でも、あらゆる種類やシーンの、才能あるローカルのアンダーグラウンド ミュージシャンを支援するプラットフォームです。

Q3. You also seems to find young Asian producers and DJs not only in South Korea. Why did you spread the area abroad?
韓国に限らず若手のアジア人プロデューサーやDJを発掘されているようです。なぜ（韓国の外の）海外に広げたのですか？
A3. I am a Korean. living in Seoul, South Korea in East Asia, from birth to present, so I wanted to communicate with more overseas regions on Seoul based.
And, of course, I was very much influenced by the culture from East Asia, so I think I can relate to them easily. I think this has been naturally progressed this way.
私は、生まれてから現在に至るまで、東アジアの韓国ソウルに住んでいる、韓国人です。 なので、ソウルを拠点に、より海外の地域と交流したかったのです。
そしてもちろん、東アジアの文化にとても影響を受けていたので、（アジアのプロデューサーやDJに）親しみ易いのだと思います。 自然とこのようになったと思います。

Q4. What does it mean "Oslated" ?
"Oslated"とはどういう意味ですか？
A4. "Oslated" is a portmanteau of my DJ alias, Oslon, and the word "curated".
私のDJ名義"Oslon"と"curated（キュレーションされた）"の掛け合わせです。

Q5. I think that Tech House and EDM are major recently. Young people don't listen to techno music a lot in Japan. How about in South Korea? Which genres are popular?
最近はテックハウスやEDMがメジャーだと思います。日本では若い人はあまりテクノミュージックを聴きません。韓国ではどうですか？どんなジャンルが人気がありますか？
A5. It’s quiet similar in South Korea, but recently, there have been many clubs in Seoul that aimed for techno genre, and they are called underground clubs here.
However, because of there are many different type or taste in techno genre, I’d like to save my words and not to comment much on the issue.
韓国でも全く同じですが、最近はテクノを目的としたソウルにはたくさんあり、ここ（韓国では）アンダーグラウンドと呼ばれています。
しかしながら、テクノには様々なタイプのジャンルがあるので、これについて多くは語らず、コメントを控えたいと思います。

Q6. Japanese techno producer, Yukari Okamura, will release her EP from your label in 1st June. Why did you decide to release them? Could you tell me good points of her tunes?
日本のテクノプロデューサー Okamura Yukariさんが、6月1日にあなたのレーベルからリリースするそうですね。なぜリリースすることになったのですか？彼女の曲の優れた点についてお聞かせ頂けますか？
A6. I checked out her existing albums, and demos she sent me before, and I found the point where she intersects with Oslated's taste and direction.
And because I felt she is a young talent producer in East Asia, I wanted to be a part of discovering a great new producer in East Asia.
私は、彼女の既存のアルバムと以前彼女が送ってくれたデモをチェックし、Oslatedのテイストと方向性に合う点を見つけました。
そして彼女が東アジアの若く才能あるプロデューサーだと感じたので、東アジアの新しい優れたプロデューサーを発掘する一部を担いたいと思いました。

She has more to developed in sound texture still, but I do feel her deep sensible potential, and her story-telling is very beautiful,
彼女はまだ音の質感に磨きをかけている途中ですが、深いセンスを秘めており、彼女のストーリーテリングは美しいです。

Q7. Do you have any message for Japanese clubbers and DJs?
日本のクラバーやDJに何かメッセージがありましたら、どうぞ。
A7. Definitely. I get lots of feedback from them. I have been sharing culture and often have a deep conversation with many Japanese artists and friends for a long time. Also, Japanese people are the top buyers of Oslated's album in Asia so I sincerely thank my Japanese friends.
もちろんです。（日本の方から）たくさんのフィードバックをもらっています。 多くの日本人アーティストや友人と、文化を共有し、長い間深い会話を交わしてきました。 また、日本の方は、アジアでOslatedのアルバムのトップ購入者なので、日本の友人に心から感謝しています。

I have listened to Yukari Okamura’s new EP , which will release on 1st June. I felt like I was triping to an planet. Each tune has different aspect. Titles stir my imagination. My most favorite tune is "Promise", which has exactly "Oslated" taste. I like the sound like train's running in the distance midnight. I could hear the sound like walking on the gravel at the last part of the tune. It might require skill to use that part. I look forward to how DJs will mix this tune. each remix has also an uniqueness. "Grow (Doctrina Natura Remix)" seems to be techno tune with Afrobeat rhythm, which is interesting.
6月1日にリリースされるOkamura YukariさんのEPを聴かせて頂きました。惑星を旅しているように感じました。それぞれの曲に特徴があります。タイトルが想像力をかき立てます。私の一番のお気に入りは『Promise』で、まさにOslatedのテイストを持っています。夜中に遠くで聞こえる電車が走るような音が好きです。曲の最後に砂利道を踏みしめるような音が聞こえます。この部分を使うには、テクニックが必要かもしれません。DJの人たちがこの曲を使ってどうミックスするのか楽しみです。4っつのリミックスもそれぞれ違った個性があります。『Grow (Doctrina Natura Remix)』はアフロビートのあるテクノ曲のようで、面白いです。

Yukari Okamura, is an artist who specialises in a gentle and forgiving sound.
Her productions are a unique fusion of euphoric and psychedelic techno, distinctive with her captivating and attentive sound design. They can be heard on releases on Circular Limited, OVUNQVE, Occultech Recording, Aparat Rec. and Oslated.
Sharing the same characteristics as her productions, her live DJ sets delve deeper into the psychedelic dimension of techno, leading the dancefloor to a state of euphoria, through her precise, deliberate control over sound and energy.

Oslated is a label for underground locals in and out of Seoul. We have been make opportunities that introduce great local underground musicians and support them to be developed. We have been managing international podcast series and local parties in Seoul. And by launching our more releases, we are planning to introduce talented local artists.
